Jim leads Berline | Advertising, Marketing & Digital Communications with the confidence, competitive spirit and energy that made him an All-American football player at the University of Michigan, National Canadian Squash Champion 45+, and the two time U.S. Grand Masters Squash Champion. Sports were just the beginning of Jim’s success. He achieved the rank of youngest Vice President ever at Campbell-Ewald and the youngest Senior Vice President in BBDO’s history. And if that wasn’t enough, he also served as Executive Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors at BBDO, as well as serving as a Member of the Chrysler Corporation’s Executive Marketing Committee. Jim managed to temper his sports involvement with academic excellence.
He graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Economics, then completed an M.S. in Marketing from the University of Illinois. And finally, he did Ph.D. work in Marketing at Southern Methodist University. His career interfered with his ability to complete his Ph.D. Jim also annually attends the Harvard Business School CEO/President’s Management Program.
But, where Jim excels is as an entrepreneur. Having conquered the “big agency,” Jim turned his attention to building his own company, where he applies the experience he gained working on the largest advertising accounts in the country (brands like Chevrolet, Dodge and Lincoln/Mercury).
Jim’s calm and reassuring style is the reason that he has been able to accomplish as much as he has, and why our clients seek his advice when faced with tough business problems. Jim’s involvement in the business and civic community is extensive. He has been inducted into the Detroit Advertising Hall of Fame, been President of the Adcraft Club of Detroit, the world’s largest advertising club, been on the Board of Trustees for the Detroit Science Center, a Leadership Detroit Graduate and Board member, a member of the Founders Society of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Chairman of the Board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan, Chairman of the Henry Ford Health System Neuroscience Advisory Council, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of CATCH, a member of the Board of Directors and a Trustee of the Michigan Opera Theatre, Chairman of the Board of the Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan, Board member of The Autism Alliance of Michigan, a board member of YPO – Gold, and was the President and a member of the Global Board of Directors of MAGNET (Marketing and Advertising Global Network). It’s that kind of leadership experience and passion that has put Jim in “Who’s Who of America” and “Who’s Who in Advertising.”
Jim lives in West Bloomfield with his wife, Debra. His children are following his example. His son, Jess, a four-time collegiate squash All-American and National Champion, is a squash professional in New York City. Erin, his eldest daughter, is in retail management. And his youngest daughter, Quincy, is a medical assistant.
