A decision by owners of the Ann Arbor News to close that newspaper in July has rocked the local community, and brought national attention as the media-in-transition drama plays out in this small corner of the world. Drawing on her experience as a former senior editor at The News, Mary Morgan will discuss what led to this radical move, how it fits into the context of national trends, and what the future might hold for both the new online entity that will debut this summer — AnnArbor.com — as well as for The Ann Arbor Chronicle, an online local news publication launched by Morgan and Dave Askins in September 2008.

Mary Morgan is publisher of The Ann Arbor Chronicle, an online local news publication that she and her husband, David Askins, launched in September 2008. Previously, she worked at The Ann Arbor News for 12 years, most recently as opinion editor overseeing the newspaper’s editorials, letters to the editor and reader-submitted opinion essays. Prior to that she was business editor at The News and wrote a weekly column on local business issues.
Before joining The News in 1996, she was an assistant business editor and technology reporter for the Rochester Business Journal in Rochester, N.Y. She has a master’s degree in linguistics from Indiana University, and has taught English as a second language in China and the Central African Republic.
