How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Client Politics


Clients From Hell is totally true, amirite? Crazy requests, unreasonable deadlines, miniscule budgets – what gives?! How in the world did these people rise to the level they’re at and be this oblivious to doing things right?

As web professionals, we spend countless hours honing our craft. We give recommendations in the form of top-shelf presentations, client wine-and-dines, thought leadership content. But still (still!) we’re confronted by baffling client politics.
I used to feel this way. I used to inveigh against the bureaucracy, the in-fighting and the obtuseness. Until I realized something: the common denominator of error was me.
In this talk, I’ll share what I’ve learned about aligning incentives, understanding agendas and making yourself into your clients’ ally beyond the scope of the project you’re working on.
